A minimum of 13 people lose their lives and 98 wounded in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's major government projects.

The crash occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a line constructed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate the cause of this accident,” declared the country's president.

The president reported that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The leader stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.

Flagship Project of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the immediate past president, whose time in office concluded the prior year. This venture was intimately linked to his administration's economic goals for the southeastern region.

Another massive rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The building of both train projects was managed by the nation's military, marking a significant increase of its duties in civilian infrastructure. They were built at an fast-tracked pace, beating predictions to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had also sparked ongoing concerns over safety standards.

  • Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This involves an earlier crash this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-lethal derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the tragedy, the leader of a major opposition party called for an urgent pause in the development and management of all comparable projects.

This pause was proposed pending a comprehensive safety audit. The party emphasized that the tragedy "calls for prompt explanations."

In reply, the head of state insisted that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and management of these national projects.
